Arrival at Arusha airport and welcome by your driver-guide. Cool and lushly green, Arusha is one of Tanzania's fastest-growing cities; it spreads at the foot of Mount Meru at around 1,300 metres and enjoys a pleasant, temperate climate year-round. Arusha is the gateway to the Serengeti and the northern parks – Tanzania's safari capital – and the main base for treks on Kilimanjaro. From the airport it is about an hour's drive to your lodge; a short briefing on the programme, and the rest of the day is free to rest.

Among the animals most often seen are elephant, giraffe, impala, zebra, wildebeest and ostrich; lions like to sun themselves on the riverbanks, while leopards can sometimes be spotted dozing in the baobabs. With 550 different species, the park is also a great birding paradise.

Further game drives on the way to the Ngorongoro highlands, with a stop at the viewpoint over the massive Ngorongoro Crater, which at around 20 kilometres across is one of the largest calderas on earth. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and, with the Olduvai Gorge, holds some of the most important excavation sites in the world – archaeologists found evidence here that hominids lived over three million years ago. Arrival at the lodge in time for lunch; in the afternoon, the chance of a guided walk along the crater rim.

Between 25,000 and 30,000 animals of 115 species live on the crater floor and along the densely wooded crater walls. The crater is like a pot full of gold, filled with shimmering grass and studded with lions, herds of buffalo, zebra and wildebeest, lazy hippos and elegant flamingos. The Big Five are represented too; elephant, lion and buffalo are often seen here, and the very rare black rhino can also be spotted – sightings are comparatively frequent.

A central element of Maasai society is the age-set system: roughly every 15 years a new generation of moran (warriors) is initiated. A family's wealth is measured by the number of its children and cattle. In Tansania stammt der größte Teil des angebauten Kaffees aus dem Norden, wo sich am Fuße des Kilimandscharo riesige Kaffeeplantagen befinden; auch im Hochland von Karatu haben sich zahlreiche Kaffeeproduzenten angesiedelt. 70 Prozent des tansanischen Kaffees ist Arabica, eine Sorte, die vornehmlich in höheren Lagen gedeiht.

You visit the coffee farm and the vegetable garden, watching numerous birds, trees and shrubs along the way. In Tanzania most of the coffee grown comes from the north, where huge coffee estates lie at the foot of Kilimanjaro; the Karatu highlands, too, are home to many coffee producers. Seventy per cent of Tanzanian coffee is Arabica, a variety that thrives mainly at higher altitudes.

After breakfast, drive into Lake Manyara National Park for extensive game drives, and after a picnic lunch return to Arusha. Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's smaller parks but is well worth a visit. The lake itself is a soda lake; to the west rises the nearly 600-metre escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The park is home to over 400 bird species as well as elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe and zebra – and with a great deal of luck you may glimpse the famous tree-climbing lions, which have developed this habit over generations.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly to Zanzibar. On arrival, an approximately one-and-a-half-hour transfer to your beach hotel in the south-east of the island. Zanzibar receives the lion's share of the archipelago's tourist attention – and rightly so. The island's glorious coasts are barely a stone's throw away; its sandy beaches are among the finest in the world. Unguja is the Swahili name of the island; the word "Zanzibar" derives from the Arabic Zinj el-Barr, "land of the black people", by which Arab traders referred to the islands and the coast opposite.

The old town of Stone Town is one of the most impressive places in all of Africa: here elements of the Indian subcontinent, the Arabian Peninsula, Africa and Europe combine in an exciting way. Zanzibar is so small that guests can stay both in Stone Town and at a beach hotel and still explore the whole island. The tourist infrastructure is good, with hotels and restaurants for every taste and budget.
